Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed SB531 into law, amending current requirements around caller identification during a telephone solicitation.

The changes include:

  • Prohibits blocking of caller ID transmission
  • Prohibits the knowing transmission of misleading or inaccurate caller ID, except when transmitted on behalf of a seller and the number displayed can be called for DNC requests during regular business hours
  • Prohibits the knowing transmission of misleading or inaccurate caller ID with the intent to defraud or obtain anything of value, including personally identifiable information

Violation of these provisions can result in penalties ranging from $100 to $10,000 per violation. The law will become effective on the first day of the 13th month following publication, likely around April 1st, 2025.
